Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
