As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
